A Fish Tale

Yesterday there was little or no swell so we took some of the guests fishing. Alasdair has been twice before, however this was my first time out on the boat whilst trawling for fish. We brought home three fish so you could say that the fishing expedition was a success!

We ate the fish sashimi style with homemade pickled ginger and wasabi. From ocean to mouth within the hour - it doesn't get any fresher (or better!) than that.

What We're Actually Doing...

We've been here just over seven weeks now and time has flown. With guests coming and going and all the work in-between, it's hard to believe our stay is almost over! Before we know it, we will be back in Byron Bay for a small visit and to pick up our darling pooch, and then home to sweet Tasmania. We have actually been away from our island state for five years now, which has also gone by very quickly. Too quickly!

Anyway, I thought i'd better write a little about what we do here at Pitstop Hill before it's all over and we're back in icy Hobart and all motivation is gone...

Alasdair is a surf guide. He takes the guests out on the boats and they go searching for ombak besar (big waves). Sometimes, if the waves are small they'll go fishing or go for walks but that's not often.  He also films a little and takes photos. And surfs.

I help out in the bar and around the guesthouse, making pots of Sumartran coffee and cracking Bintang cans when required. I get up before six in the morning to open up the main rumah (house) and to put the kettle on. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared around the surf, meaning jam karet (time is rubber, flexible...whenever).

When the guys go out on the boat, I am free to go for swims, read... just potter. Things I don't usually get to do at home...

We love working here.

Island Garden

This is the only pineapple in the garden and we've been watching it ripen for a few weeks now. It's small but i'm sure it's going to be very sweet and tasty. As for the coconuts, there are thousands and all of them are delicious... and free. The two guys in the bottom photo, we work with.

Five Year Anniversary

During our ten day break, Alasdair and I celebrated our five years together. We went swimming during the day and ate the best coconut-y curry with a dessert of chocolate cake for dinner. We had no electricity, so we ate by the soft light of a lantern. Thankyou to Megan and Paul (the owners of Pitstop Hill) for their hospitality (Megan's wonderful cooking yet again).

Sunday

Sunday - the day of rest. Our guests have departed which means Alasdair and I have the day to potter around the islands, eat indo-style prawns with fresh bread (baked by the lovely Megan), and nap the afternoon away.

Equatorial Heat & Sandy Feet

Leaving our doggie of course, along with friends and family was the hardest part of undertaking what most would consider a chance of a lifetime; working in remote and coastal Indonesia. Of course the usual fears of tropic remoteness loomed but now we are here those fears are replaced with awe and an increasingly overwhelming sense of relaxation...but we still miss our dog!

The Mentawai Island chain sits off the coast of Sumatra and is only accessible by boat, a four hour minimum ferry ride to the outer islands. The largest island nearest to Pitstop Hill (our place of residence) is Pulau Siberut. The people of the Mentawai chain have enjoyed a lifestyle relatively devoid of rampant technology and this continues to be the way, but for how long?

The days are long, hot and slow. Between the lethargic sway of palm fronds another island shimmers off in the distance and barely discernible palms trees mirror our own circular paradise. The place is surreal and post card moments display themselves at every turn of the head.

A place infused with vibrancy and raw nature.

Awe.
